Winter has two temperature options; freezing and overheated

I feel like I have two options in this house in the winter – you can live without any heat which is bitterly cold and dangerous.

Sometimes I think that living in an ice cold climate is a way to get closer to God. If you ask me, there is something spiritual about human suffering. All of those people who live in mild climates with routinely sunny days and low daily humidity have no idea what it’s like to wake up and struggle. Unfortunately, that also means they don’t know what it’s like to connect to a higher power in order to get through every single miserable day. This is what I have been enduring for the past three months of this brutal winter season. I honestly never thought that I could survive another Midwestern winter, based on the sub-zero temperatures and feet of falling snow that I remember from my childhood. Unfortunately, the thing that I did not remember from my childhood was the central heating, cooling, and air quality control system in our house. Because I was just a kid, I never paid that much attention to the indoor air quality when I was younger. I did not have to pay for the routine heating, cooling, and air quality control appointments or the energy bills, so the HVAC system was really none of my concern. As an adult, I can tell you that the heating and cooling units are terrible. I feel like I have two options in this house in the winter – you can live without any heat which is bitterly cold and dangerous. Or, you can live with your forced air furnace blasting at full power all season. It’s either bitterly cold or swelteringly hot, no matter what. And I’ve become more religious than ever.
