When my son was little, nothing fascinated him more than big old things.
Waiting for the big brown delivery truck was fun, and passing a semi on the way somewhere had him trying to hang out the car window.
Good thing we had him strapped in! I took him to a farm open house one time, but he didn’t care one iota about the animals. When the tractor came out, that’s when his face lit up. That’s why his dad took him to work one day to show him all the big stuff used at his workplace every day. Most exciting to little Stevie was the industrial boiler room. The industrial boilers are constructed of really thick welded metal, and when my hubby explained that there is so much pressure inside an industrial boiler that it could blow up, of course that’s what his little mind wanted to see. Of course, he didn’t really understand the true power of the boiler! He also wanted to hear all about how the boiler works, so his dad patiently explained it to him. The boiler uses a flame (even more fun for a youngster!) to heat up a bunch of water in the boiler tank. The water turns to steam, and big pumps in the boiler room send the water into these giant pipes, where it gets used by whoever needs it. In this case, the industrial boilers feed the bottling plant where my husband worked. He told him the boiler system’s pipes were so big, he could walk right through them, and little Steveie’s got as big as saucers. Years later, when the plant had to get a mobile boiler rental service, Stevie was amazed all over again!
