Hydronic heating is a lot more energy efficient than electric heating

My dad has been living in a basement owned by an old work associate.

After the old man retired from the electrician’s union at 65, he offered to let my dad stay in his basement apartment below his house for a reduced rate.

Since my dad was looking for a new residence after his previous rental was being sold, he accepted his friend’s offer. He has everything down there that he could possibly need, a kitchen and living room, a bedroom, bathroom, and a utility closet. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a clothes washer or dryer and instead takes all of his laundry to a local laundromat. I have visited him a few times, but he doesn’t keep his apartment clean. And since basements are already humid to begin with, he has a mold issue down there that he denies. I get respiratory issues whenever I visit, and I’ve told him to buy a dehumidifier and an air purifier but he refuses. He has a window air conditioner, but the only time he uses it is on random days in July and August. So he only ever has indoor air control for a tiny fraction of the entire year. Otherwise, he uses a boiler during the cold parts of the winter season. It’s a great way to heat his basement and costs less to use than electric heating. I suppose his hydronic heating setup dries out his basement to some degree, but it’s already fairly dry in his region from October to March every year. No matter how dry it gets down there during that six month span, it doesn’t make up for the other half of the year. I don’t know if my allergies can handle visiting him any longer.
