Don’t forget to leave the heat on

Apparently, my daughter turned off the heating system entirely and our pipes had burst

Sometimes I think that having teenagers is a special circle of hell. I swear to God that these kids are trying to kill me. I never really wanted to be a parent in the first place. Don’t get me wrong, I love my children… But they really love to drive me crazy. I can never count on them for anything. Recently, the irresponsibility of my kids even led to a financial emergency when they couldn’t be bothered to do one simple thing for me. We were headed out of town for a family trip when I asked my daughter if she could please turn down the thermostat to 55° so that the furnace was still operating but it was not running constantly to heat an empty house. There’s no point in operating an expensive central heating system when you are not going to be enjoying it. However, in these parts you cannot turn off your forced air furnace entirely or else your pipes will freeze and burst. I honestly expected that my daughter was capable of this simple request, considering her bedroom is directly next to the central heating and cooling system thermostat. However, she is always happy to prove me wrong. About two days into our family vacation I received a panicky phone call from my neighbor who stated that there was Ice leaking out from under our front door. Apparently, my daughter turned off the heating system entirely and our pipes had burst. Now the water was leaking all the way onto the street and creating ice. I hope the neighborhood kids enjoyed the ice rink we made them for the cost of a full home renovation.
